Mirror Chassis Assembly Machine

A manually operated work station for assembling both left and right hand lorry chassis mirror assemblies.

A fixture with urethane nests and toggle clamps to hold the upper and lower chassis arm spigots in position for the assembly operations. There are two interchangeable lower arm nests one for the short and one for the long arm variant. Manually interchangeable nylon profile plates are provided to poka yoke the chassis arm and bracket assembly; these sit on top of the nests. There are six variants of plates for the upper bracket and two variants of plates for the lower bracket.

The operator rotates the fixture through 180 degrees and present the upper arm or the lower arm uppermost for assembly operations. The fixture is designed so that the chassis arms can only be loaded to the nests the right way up. A spring loaded (manual release) shot bolt is provided to lock the fixture in either position. Also mounted on the top plate is a vertically orientated, manually operated non-return press with tooling to locate and press home each of the starlock washers. With the chassis upper arm uppermost the operator:
  • Loads the three in one indent, grease, indent cone, spring, grease and upper bracket to the chassis upper arm  spigot
  • Loads the star lock washer to the press tool and manually presses the washer home.
With the chassis lower arm uppermost the operator:
  • Loads a friction washer, a lower foot and a wavy washer to the chassis lower arm spigot.
  • Loads the star lock washer to the press tool and manually presses the washer home.
